That works but there some further cautions about reinstalling I recently 
learned. VoiceOver settings do not get preserved as part of the system 
settings if you try to preserve your system and network settings across 
installations.  Neither do airport settings.  Unfortunately I didn't 
braille my airport password so will be using an open network protected by 
the router and Apple firewall if I can get that running in the future. 
The paper the airport credentials was on was also lost.
