Subject: [access-l] Optical Scanners and OCR for the MAC
Some time ago, I asked about OCR programs for the
Macintosh and was told about Omnipage which is most likely a
very good application. I then read an article about the Mac
Voiceover system in which the topic of scanning and OCR came up.
It mentioned that several brands of optical scanners have OCR
software that comes with them. For as little as I do, that is
probably good enough if the software works reasonably well. My
present system is a DOS-based P.C. running a HP ScannJet Plus
and the OsCar OCR program from TSI. It has worked fairly well for scanning books
and manuals.
Basically, If I get a Mac to replace this aging system,
are there any of those flat-bed scanner OCR programs that would
at least do as well as the present old system?
In my job, I don't need to do much scanning any more
these days, but I don't want to loose that capability for
occasional OCR reading.
Mostly, I manage Unix systems via ssh plus access web
sites for various reasons throughout the day and it sounds like
the Mac running Voiceover will probably do this fairly well.
Any comments are appreciated.
