Yep, its quite common everywhere, volume controls for example.
If you want to have a good play with how they work then go into
sounds under System Preferences, select the Output tab and play with
the volume slider, move it up and down, you can always reset it using
the volume up/down buttons on your Apple keyboard.

Screen saver does not need to require a password, go to systems
pref and screen saver and turn off password requirement. And as
long as you are using the computer the screen saver will not
come on anyway. You set the time for it to start in the same
