You can arrow strictly through the column the VO cursor is in with VO- Arrows. So, If you want to skim through and just hear subjects, use VO-Right or Left arrow to get to the subject field, then arrow up and down with VO-Up or Down arrows. You will only hear the subject line. Great for skiming messages. In fact, it's one of my favorite things about mail on the Mac.

Hey guys,
OK, I'm getting around mac mail OK, but one little annoying thing, and
perhaps some of you have seen this.
As you arrow down to the messages it tells you the row number and all of
that onsense.
Any way to get around that?
When I was using outlook it tells you the name, and I could zip through messages like nothing, but it tells you the row number when you go down
all the messages, and it's really annoying.
Any ideas on how to get around it?

Thanks,
Jed
