Hoew do you know if it it hhorizontal or verticle? Also how do you
know which side of the splitter you are on?

Just the one in Mail. Splitters are just dividing lines across the
screen: some go left to right (horizontal), others top to bottom
(vertical). They're useful for finding where you are on a given
screen.
