Jed, Did you try doing a Command+w to close the individual window?  
That was how I was able to correct a problem I had of reading text and 
sending mail, and it corrected it right away.  A hard lesson learned, 
but I learned to make sure all my message windows are closed before I 
start interacting with individual messages.  Otherwise, I would have 
got an incorrect or improper reading.  HTH.  Richie Gardenhire,
