A fax is a picture sent over a phone line. If you want someone to recieve
a fax otherwise you will have to use one of the web services that take your
text and/or pictures and turn it into a picture which they then fax for
you. It is sent to the faxing service by the internet.
They can also recieve faxes over the phone others send you and make the
picture available to you by the internet. Remember it is a picture of text
and must be converted by ocr into text.
This has nothing to do with the kind of computer or operating system you
use. If you want to fax directly you need a modem to send material as a
fax over the phone line. A stand alone fax machine has a modem built in.
