Dear Greg and all,
Your learn pretty quickly that if you don't have to deal with Vision
Australia for equipment you don't.
Even garden variety equipment that you can pick up at the $2 shop you pay at
least double for.
You wait till they have a sale and get lucky dip items which can be great,
or buy online which is now especially good value since our dollar is at a
good exchange rate. Many blindness companies worldwide will ship with
freepost except braillers are too heavy I think...
We also miss out on a lot of the deals and offers that exist for US
citizens, most notably the trade-in that was had with Freedom Scientific
where you could trade in your BrailleNote and get a PacMate for a few
thousand dollars... Pretty good deal since most people don't want to buy
used BrailleNotes here... Especially those with the Classic motherboard.
Luckily I happened to travel to the States at the time and got the deal
albeit reluctantly...
That was the biggest drawcard for the Mac, even in Aussie dollars they work
out at a reasonable price and you don't have to be beholden to anyone.
