I don't know how much you know about Unix and open source. Basically, Fink is a program that helps you install open source Unix programs on Mac OS X. Once you install Fink, you can use it to install these Unix programs by doing something like fink install ncftp or fink install lynx from the terminal.

Actually, I don't think you can upload directories with the stock
terminal FTP program. You could install a program called Ncftp.
You can install it by doing the following:
1. Download Fink at http://fink.sourceforge.net.
2. After Fink is installed, do "fink install ncftp" from the
terminal.
After Ncftp is installed, you can upload a directory to a host by
doing the following:
1. Type ncftp -u yuorusername whateverhost.com
2. After you are logged in Type "bin" and press return to use
binary mode.
Then do mput -R whateverdirectory.
To download a directory do mget -R whateverdirectory.
