There's probably a good supply available, so part of the learning activity will need to be finding already existing good wheels you can get and put into use. Times will come when an existing add-on doesn't do quite what you want, so that's when the long learning curve climb pays off. Copy to a new file and modify to fit your needs and off you go. The education community quite a while ago used to use nroff and eventually switched to latex. Since apples hung out most often in educational institutions where people didn't mind learning latex that was the path left for the rest of us to follow.
