Hi Kate,
Command+F5 will turn on VoiceOver during installation just as it does
in the OS. Don't feel dumb, the installation features of VoiceOver
and OS X are not all that well documented. The volume may be very
low when you start VO during installation and you may want to use
headphones. On an aside, I love your signature line.
