They were last updated in August and that actually introduced a number of pronunciation issues that were not there in the past such as VoiceOver, iMovie, iChat were no longer spoken correctly. I believe that next week will will release an update that fixes those. If you have other ones, please email me off-list with those.
The HQ voices do not allow pitch modification, that is correct. Only the HD voices allow pitch modification. Adding pitch modification to the HQ voices would negatively affect the quality because of the extra audio processing it would require. Acapela Group opted for maximum quality rather than pitch modification. But, as I said, in about a week something will happen on the Mac platform that may reveal there is more to life then pitch modification. Can't say more about it now.
