So no external drive needed for this type of install. I can do this
and go to mail and send a message like I never left it?

It will come up during the setup assistant, but if you miss this,
you can go to utilities, and select migrate assistant. This will
allow you to migrate information from another volume on your
drive. Including things like applications, user settings, and files.

No .mac account, so I would use the migration assistant instead.
What do I need exactly to do this?

No, a clean install will wipe you out, unless you've got your
email, address Book, Calendar, ETC, synced to your .mac account.
Otherwise, you need to use the migrate assistant, which will pull
all of your data from another Tiger drive. This is a great
option for upgrading to Leopard. Also, entering in your .mac
address will not pull over your home directory. This is where
all of your media/preferences/data lives.

SO A CLEAN INSTALL DOESN'T WIPE YOU OUT? I THOUGHT A CLEAN
INSTALL WOULD GIVE YOU THE OUT OF THE BOX FOR THE FIRST TIME
EXPERIANCE.

Wow! Leopard is really cool. Check out the new Front Row, how
accessible it is and responsive. I just signed in with my
Apple ID and everything appeared like magic on my Mac Book
where I did the clean install. Email settings, address book,
everything. Really slick.
