While in the finder, say the applications folder or on the desktop,  
press command-, that is command with comma.  Check the boxes and make  
sure to uncheck the box for opening finder windows in a new window.   
When you put in a cd, connect an external device, it shows up on the  
desktop.  This works in leopard and tiger.
