I've just been looking at Keynote again and find that speech balloons crash VoiceOver. VO will read text boxes, however.

If these PowerPoint files are course work, why not ask the person producing them to save them as Word documents? It would be easier for that person to do it than for you unless you are also using Windows.

To open PowerPoint documents you need Keynote from iWork08. You can download a 30-day demo from the Apple site. Keynote is reasonably accessible, unlike Pages and Numbers.
