Hi,
All you really need to do is to start from the Leopard install CD and wwhen you get to where you select the location and type of install, just select Erace and install and it will work. In this case, you don't need to use disk utility. Also, for something like erasing a disk, remember that you have to be on another disk to erase the one in question.
