I knew this might be a problem with leopard; the memory on my second mac mini is only 256 mb. Since we mostly use it for Rachel's music, I've never had it upgraded. I knew this might be a problem with Leopard but didn't think it would be a problem with the installer.
When I boot the dvd either by doing "restart" in the install application window or by holding down C while turning on the computer, it spins and makes noise for quite a while. When it finally stops completely, I can load voiceover and press the initial button that takes you to the language chooser table. But after that, no matter how long I let it go, it just spins and whirs and makes noise and never gets any further. I know it's not a problem with the dvd because it works on my other machine; I know it's not a hardware problem because I can run the Tiger installer fine on that computer. So I'm assuming it must be too little ram. Of course, I could probably still install Leopard by putting the machine in target disk mode and running the installer from the other mac mini, but if I'm having problems with running the Leopard installer at 256 mb, I'd probably have problems actually running leopard if I did succeed in installing it. As I said before, I knew the amount of ram could be an issue with the actual running of Leopard but I didn't realize I'd have trouble with just the installer. It was a very interesting experience. Thought I'd post it in case anybody else had the same problem. I think that mac mini is going to keep running Tiger unless I want to put the money into more ram; I think it would be wiser to save for an Intel mac mini or Imac instead.
