Hank and all,
under speech in system prefs, there are two tabs, one is speech
recognition. if you select this tab, the first thing you have to
do is turn speakable items on. Be aware that when yo do this, the
escape key becomes the listen key for speakable items so it is sort
of crippled for other functions, you have to press it twice if I
remember correctly in order to use it as an escape key. Once you
have turned speakable items on, it wants you to callibrate the
microphone or whatever input source you have selected for the
audio. There are other options as well and you can even create
your own speakable items. It is somewhat complex, but this should
be enough to get you started.

Subject: speakable items
Hi there all,
I've been just starting to muck around with speakable items... I
have to laugh for as an Australian, I have to put on a US accent
before it will understand me! I get immediate recognition with my
accent which is nice. - just thought I'd share with you my
findings incase anyone else is having trouble.
