That's what I meant, the speech settings in system preferences. I know you can have automator run shell scripts, so I guess you could have a script that uses the say command. I'm still very new at automator, so am not exactly sure how that's accomplished. Still though, it does seem like a bit of an oversight that you can't adjust the speed in the automator action.

might it be honoring the speech settings in system prefs? could you use the same switches as "say"? I believe it has a rate.

Hey Cara and Jane. Unfortunately there seems to be one major drawback with the text to file and speak text automator actions. Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the speaking rate of the output. There's a popup button in the action settings that allow you to set the voice you want to use, but no speed control. Also, it doesn't seem to honor the setting in speech preferences.

Jane, am not sure about adding new actions such as pasting into Books2Burn, but I'm sure there are others here who know quite a bit more on it. I did find the following though, as a predefined action.

Text to Audio File

This action takes text and creates a sound file using Text to Speech.

Input: Text
Result: Files/Folders
Version: 1.0
Copyright: Copyright © 2004-2007 Apple Inc.

So you could copy the text to the clipboard via an Automator action and then also have it create an audio file all with one step.

I was tghining about Cara's question, and how well that seemed to work.

So, would I be able to make an action to take the text from within an email--jnot including the addresses, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into say books2burn? Then I could do the creating of the audio book myself, if needd be, unless there were a wy to just have it set a AppleScript or something to automate the entire process ...
