Jed, the reason for pointing you to trash in the dock is so that you know where you can check trashed items before you empty the trash. Opening by clicking on the trash brings up a finder window for these items. The other reason for going to trash in the dock for this answer is that I assume you were in iTunes when you wanted to empty the trash. Going to the dock, arrowing to trash, and emptying returns you to the iTunes app. Another fast way of doing this from iTunes is command-tab and arrow to finder, command-shift-delete, then command-tab and arrow back to iTunes, where command-tab allows you to cycle through your active applications. (I usually use this on my laptop by holding down the command key and tapping the tab key to advance through the applications. Command-shift-tab searches in the opposite direction, but since that's more awkward to hold down; I tap the left arrow key while continuing to hold down the command key if I want to move through the applications in the opposite direction, and I release all keys when I reach the app I want).
