if you want the size with the second method, you must be in column or list 
view.

There's a couple ways to do it, but one easy one is to Get Info on the
selected drive (command I), expand the General section, where it'll say
Kind: Volume, Created...Modified..until you reach Capacity, where it'll read
you the drive size, and the next one in the list should be Available, and
after Available will be Used.  Hope that's what you were looking for.
 Otherwise, you could open a Finder window on a folder on the drive you're
interested in, and navigate around until you hear the number of items in
said folder, directly afterwards will be the readout of the space available
on that drive.
