Well apple script is a full scripting language.  Where as automator is  
a series of pre-programmed actions that you arrange in a sequence.   
Obviously applescript is more powerful, but automator is easier and  
faster to get things done with.  The help inside automator isn't too  
bad.  I have also found some pretty good automator web sites.  They  
are http://www.automatorworld.com, and http://www.automator.us.
