Hi David and James,

Excellent suggestion from David! I realize that the problem may simply be an
iTunes problem, especially since there have been numerous problem reports
about the latest upgrade to QuickTime since the end of last week. Can you
look through my earlier posts to Shaun and others about the Monday and
Friday MacFixIt problem reports and solutions to the QuickTime update?
(The default action for an Audio CD is to open iTunes, which uses
QuickTime to play and encode).

I'm not running the latest version of QuickTime, so I wouldn't spot this.
(The reason is complicated, but basically, I'm not going to update QuickTime
until I can update my system to Leopard, and I have to keep Tiger running
to run certain programs that have not been upgraded to Leopard. With
the latest QuickTime AAC recording changed in a way that affects my audiobook
recording habits, and there are fixes for Leopard, but not Tiger.)

When I see odd problems of the sort James described, I check macfixit.com
to find out whether there are problem reports associated with upgrades.
You can read the last three days' worth of posts without a subscription.
My QuickTime problem posts excerpt some of the relevant troubleshooting
reports.

Cheers,

Esther
