VO is working as expcted at least in MS word.

Hi. I am a newbie when it comes to the MAC and voiceover, so my
questions may seem simple, but here goes.
I was trying to use VO with several apps, such as text wrangler and
Microsoft word for the MAC, but I was unable to interact with the text
in those apps. What I did was to use control option and right arrow
and kept doing that, but the only thing, aside from various buttons,
and other objects, was a scroll bar, but no text area to interact
with. I even tried clicking the mouse in the text area and trying to
route the voiceover cursor to the text, but it would not let me do
that. Am I doing something wrong here? I was able to use text edit
and that worked successfully.
VO also seems not to work very well in terminal mode, I was trying to
use emacs in the terminal.
