Converted to Wave but it says AIFF

Listers I converted some files from .mp3 to .wav and burned them to  
disc. When I checked the disc the extension changed to .aiff. Is this  
cool and will it play in a standard CD player that doesn't have MP3  
capabilities? What is aiff anyway?
