Hi Scott,
It needs working eyes because it is a skintight fit that is "glued" to
the surface of the Mac. It also has several pieces that have to be
positioned very accurately. Also, it is applied wet and bubbles will
form that make it unsightly.
BTW, it can be removed if necessary so the glue is not permanent, but
the plastic doesn't come off edasily.
To give you an idea of the process, it works something like applying
decals to model planes You get the stuff wet and when it dries, its
attached to the Mac.

Just FYI there is a product called Invisible Shield that will
protect a portable Mac from scratches. It's a film that is used
to protect the leading edge of helicopter blades from sand and
other debris. It is custom fitted for specific Macs so it fits
very well. The only problem is that it will require sighted help
to install it.
