You need to have a document open in TextEdit for which you want
a word count. Then, if you've copied Tim's WordCounter.app to your
machine and clicked it, you'll get a window that says "The word count
is" and a number. Carriage return to dismiss that window.

I ran these by double-clicking on the app with my trackpad; if I do a
VO-keys+space bar or single click, I have an option to cancel or run
the script, and I have to carriage return to go ahead (or select a
cancel button)

This is very similar to Greg's AppleScript, except Tim has compiled it
and saved it as an app. Otherwise, you would have had to open up
the Script Editor in the AppleScript folder of the Applications menu,
and pasted or typed in Greg's code, and then pressed the "run"
button to execute it.

I did notice one set of TextEdit files that didn't seem to behave as
expected under this app: if I select text from web pages and copy
to a TextEdit file, or if I use the Services menu in Safari to send the
selection to a TextEdit file, then that file's word count evaluate with
the AppleScript (either Tim's or Greg's) is odd -- it might be the
number of lines instead of words. But if use he command-line
"wc" command from the terminal window I get the correct number
of words. Maybe this is an artifact of the web page formatting
characters or line break sequences? (I tried this on some of the
pages under the various topics under Tim's pages at:
http://homepage.mac.com/kilburns/voiceover/ ). Bizarre, but
text entered by typing in TextEdit seems to get counted correctly.

• Go to the Finder.
• Go to the Go menu.
• Down to iDisk.
• Right and then down to "Other Users Public Folder".
• Type in "kilburns" for the Users iDisk name.

That should bring up my Public folder for you where there is a folder
called TextEdit Scripts that are yours for the using and taking.
