I'll answer what I can and leave the rest for others.
LR: First off. burning DMG files on the mac..... can it be done
within the OS or
do I need an external app that costs money? or is there something
free that
works?
TK: As long as you don't want it to be bootable you should be able to
burn most .dmg files from the finder.
LR: voiceover starts fine on desktop.
can it be started before it hits the desktop? i.e on logon screens
etc? can
someone please walk me through it.
TK: go under the Apple menu to the System Preferences. Press the tab
key then the "a" key. That should put you on the Accounts system
Preference. Now, navigate left to find the lock. Press VO-space on
the Lock and type in your Administrator password. This password will
be the one you entered when you first set up your Mac. Now, navigate
right to just after the ToolBar. Interact With the Accounts, Groups
and Login Options List and navigate through it until you find the
Login Options item. Stop Interacting With the List. Navigate right
until you find the "Use VoiceOver at Login" checkbox, press VO-space
to activate it. You should be off and running now.
