Thanks as always.
Was able to figure out how to save both files and work with the MS
word file using text edit.
Will try saving the XLS file as a PDF and see if I can access it that
way.
I have emailed apple's accissibility team just to add my voice to
those who want Iwork accessible. I am asssuming that if Iwork were
accessible I would be able to work with the XLS file in numbers.

TK: xls are Microsoft Excel documents an, of course, are not
accessible. you could read them by saving them as a pdf or you
could get the app called Tables that will read Excel documents and
manipulate the document using Tables as it is accessible.
