Hi Hank,
Your questions are numbered below with my answers initialed between:
1. how do I network a mac to a windows xp box and have it
automaticly show up when booting up or when I come with in range of
network?
TK: First you need to know the network name of your XP box. Go to
your Finder and press cmd-shift-k and a window should open with all
the machines residing within your network. Take note of the
broadcasted name of the XP box. Now, press cmd-k to bring up the
Connect to Server dialog. Type in the following substituting the XP
boxes name:
• smb://XPboxname
You will then be asked to put in a username and password for which you
should put in the username and password you use to login to the XP box.
Part 2 of #1: To have it automatically connect upon login, do the
following:
• connect to the XP box from your Mac.
• go to system Preferences.
• choose Accounts.
• Unlock the lock.
• Navigate to the Account, Groups and Login Options List and Interact
With it.
• Locate your account name.
• stop Interacting with the List.
• Navigate to the Login Items tab and VO-space on it to activate it.
• Navigate past the Table to the "Add Login Item" button and press it.
• Press cmd-shift-c to bring focus to your computer in the File Table.
• Interact With the File Table.
• Navigate to the share-name for the XP box.
• Stop Interacting With the File Table.
• Navigate to the Add button.
That should do it. It's not possible to set it to connect upon coming
into range, things don't work that way.
2. how do I network 2 macs togeather? this one is from my friend.
TK: Whether you are doing this for yourself or your friend, it's the
same lol (Lucky I think I'm funny.
• Go to your system Preferences.
• Activate the Sharing System Preference.
• Go to the Services Table.
• Take note of your computer name.
• Make sure that Personal File Sharing is turned on.
• Close the System Preference.
• From another Mac, press cmd-k to bring up the Connect to Server
dialog.
• Type in the computer name you wish to connect to then return.
• You will be prompted for a username and password, enter them.
• choose the volume you wish to connect with from the Volumes Table
then press return.
That should do it.
3. how do we share files from mac to mac? another question from my
friend.
• Once you've done everything in Question #2, you're able to move
things back and forth.
There are privilege/permission parameters in this sharing process but
if you log on as an administrative user to the other computer, there
will be no restrictions. That being said, no restrictions can be a
very scary thing, so be very careful what gets copied between the two
machines.
There are other methods as well that can be much faster like using a
firewire cable to connect the computers together and starting one up
in Target mode, very fast indeed. You can also connect an ethernet
cable between the two machines which gives you faster transfer rate
than wireless.
HTH.
