Eric,
If you check the "Use F1,F2... as Standard Function Keys" checkbox in System Preferences::Hardware:Keyboard & Mouse:Keyboard pane, you shouldn't have to use the Fn key for software functions. You will have to use Fn for hardware functions like changing the volume. This will also prevent you from accidentally muting audio by pressing the F3 key.
