Well, I know this doesn't fix your current problem, but once you get this
fixed you might want to change your login options so it shows the usernames
and you just select the right one and type in the password instead of having
to type in both username and password. If you can't log in at all you may
have to reinstall. If you can log in as somebody you should be able to go to
user accounts in system preferences and see usernames especially if whomever
you log in as has administrative privileges.

so are you saying that as things currently stand, you can log in but not
with the user name whose password you cannot remember? if this is the
case
and the user name you are logging in with is admin then you can go ahead
and
boot normally, login with that user and pass and make any changes to any
account you need to make.

OK managed to find the utility but think i might be using the wrong
username it didn't gimve an option to change that but did manage to
