Hi Shaun, Anne, and Others,

I discovered an interesting fact about using "print" or "printer-friendly"
links to access web pages that have multiple links or images that make
it difficult to use "read all" to read text content in VoiceOver: pages like
PCWorld may have unlabeled links to "print" the article that will take
you to "printer-friendly" versions of the web page for articles that omit
the advertising, and other extraneous links.

So, as a follow-up to Shaun's question:

>> What about just reading a article and not the whole page? I find
>> that reading things like PC World is a pain because you can't just
>> read the articles text, you have to read the whole page.

and Anne's reply:

>A.R. Since VO doesn't use an off-screen model, it doesn't reorganise
>the page. It simply reads paragraph by paragraph, from left to right
>and top to bottom.
>The best way I've found to read an article on the PC World site is to
>use the Link Chooser menu to select the article, then lock the VO keys
>and read paragraph by paragraph by pressing the Down Arrow.

I tried navigating from an article chosen from a link on the PCWorld
RSS news feeds:

"Will the FAA Ban Laptop Batteries?"
Carry-on batteries are now governed by a complicated new set of rules--and
the government could get tougher.

The link from the RSS feed took me to the regular web page.

I went to the start of an article on a PC World page and used VO-keys+
down arrow. As Anne suggested, this is a method I often use. However,
the first unlabeled link after the article's title and by-line shows up
under VO-h as:

http://www.pcworld.com/printable/article/id,142749/printable.html

If you navigate to this "printable" version of the article page, you can
use "Read all" and get only the text content.

Leopard users can also use the hint from the lioncourt.com site:

VO-shift-U

In Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, VoiceOver provides this functionality with a simple
command available anywhere you can interact with HTML. VO-Shift-U will
announce the URL to which a link is pointing.

I often search for "printer-friendly" links to navigate -- this is how I
find it easiest to use the AppleScripts for iTunes web site with
VoiceOver.

In many cases, web sites will have printable versions of their articles,
but the links will only show up as "link".

So in the case of PC World, Shaun could use Link Chooser to
select the article, then VO-keys down arrow and check the first
unlabeled link to find out whether it goes to a "printable" URL.
If so, using VO-keys+space will take him to a web page where
he can "read all".

HTH

Cheers,

Esther
