Didn't see any replies yet but a few Google searches turned up a bunch of issues with Apple switching to the Agere firewire chipset rather than the TI chipset. Apparently something about doing a bus reset before transmitting data which messes up all kinds of things with real-time data streams. Windoze machine with the same chipset also have the same problems. For MacBook and tower users a supplemental firewire card seems to be the fix, but that doesn't help with the unexpandable iMac. There was also discussion that the newly released machines might have gone back to the TI chips. Here's a couple forums that talk about it:

Many of the posts are from within the last month or so so the problem is recent.

hi guys
well Ok this might not be the place to ask but hey what the heck. well as I am toying with either the mac pro or my new iMac 2.8GHZ custom with 4gb ram and 1terrabyte drive I have a rather serious concern. I spoke with someone at a pro audio manufacturer regarding the use of sound cards on an iMac and my need to tandom at least two or so firewire cards on the iMac. he said he didn't think it would be able to do it as apparently the firewire ports on the iMac are on 1 BUS. can anyone help me here or advise me on what to do please. I'm desperate to know what to do here. cheers lew
