Hi all, Regarding getting Stuffit Expander from Smith Micro, Shaun wrote: >I was wondering why I kept getting mail from them that I didn't ask >for.
When you register to download this app at http://smithmicro.com/ you agree to be placed on the mailing list for both their products and for other software companies they promote. This is why I prefer to give the ftp site of the previous distributor. <begin excerpt> Please note: By confirming your email address and downloading this file, you are signing up to receive periodic followup emails from us. Any emails we send you will contain unsubscribe information, and you may opt-out of future emails at any time. <end excerpt> There are other freeware programs for .rar like The Unarchiver: http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html However, there are still a lot of Mac applications that used the old Stuffit (.sit) format files for distribution, and this is the main reason people still get Stuffit Expander, which handles these files as well as .rar and other compressed formats. For example, Greg mentioned SoX Wrap as a good way to convert AIFF to mp3 files and handle other sound format conversions. The SoX Wrap wrapper is distributed in .sit format from: http://www.waveformsoftware.com/SoX_Wrap/soxwrap.htm (I didn't follow up with comments about SoX Wrap because as well as getting Stuffit and unpacking SoX Wrap, this would have required installing MacPorts and installing the latest version of the SoX sound exchange program, which seems a bit much for a new user). Another comment I read from someone was that their "free" version of Stuffit Expander stopped working after 30 days. But maybe that was for regular Stuffit instead of the Expander.
