My best recommendation for email is to ask your provider if they support IMAP instead of POP3.

Set up your IMAP account in Eudora / Thunderbird / Outlook on Windows and copy and paste all your emails in to your IMAP inbox (or sub folder if you prefer).

Then back in apple mail change your account type from POP3 to IMAP and copy all your email in to local folders, or just leave them on your IMAP server if it has plenty of disk space.

Note: if your email provider happens to be using Cyrus IMAP from CMU, there is a bug in Apple Mail from 10.5.2 which makes it try and change your folder prefix, which will hide any folders on the same level in your imap folder tree as the inbox ... i.e. you will see any folders which are sub folders of inbox, but not anything at the root of your imap account. Just one to watch for because I have been bitten by it a couple of times.

If your email provider doesn't support IMAP, then you can always sign up for a Gmail account, who provide IMAP support these days, and with close to 7 GB of disk space you can store quite a large volume of email.

Their automatic filtering is pretty cool too, and their spam defence is probably the best I've seen.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Mitch

Hi Erik,

When I first tried importing from outlook express in tiger, it was broken. I think they fixed it toward the end but it was deffinitely fixed in leopard so even though there may be an option for eudora, there is no guarantee that
it works. AS for firefox, I don't know but suspect it should be doable
since they tout that they are open source and cross platform. I wonder if
maybe it would be possible to install firefox on the mac and port the
bookmarks to it and then move them to safari.

Hi David,

Does this apply to firefox and eudora? I haven't used the windows
bloatware in 4 or 5 years now. Well, maybe three or four years. At
one time I was running windows xp on a 650 mhz laptop with 128 mb of
ram. There was just no hope for IE and OE.

Apple mail gives me all kinds of things I can import from, and one was
eudora. It was selected properly, so I don't see why it shouldn't
have worked.

Thanks,

Erik

to import mail, you need access to your "outlook express" folder
through
Leopard. You can do this in a number of ways depending on your
needs and
resources. Same with your favorites. You can access them directly
thorugh
a network, copy them to a portable storage device.

Once you have access to them through leopard, safari and Mail have
import
capability under the file menu. for outlook express, you will want
to make
sure you get all your folders. for favorites, you should just be
able to
import. interestingly enough, in both cases, the resulting imports
are not
tightly integrated with the rest of the mail/bookmarks. In the case
of
mail, they are in a mailbox called imported. in the case of safari,
they
are in a bookmarks folder called imported with the date of import.

Erik,

It is easy to import email and favorites. Have you tried yet? if
you
have
issues, after trying, let us know. I've done it many times.

Well dang, For me it was a no brainer. The first thing on a new
installation of leppard for me was setting up my internet connection.
The second was setting up mail so I could persecute the list here
with
all my newbie questions, smiles.

Of course I did it backwards. The first thing I should have done was
wip out a tutorial and figure out how to get to menue bars and such.
That did come later when my kid in a candystore joy had mellowed
somewhat into kick the sh*t out of this useless piece of... rage.

I also found that none of my windows files would import to the mac,
so
a vmware instalation of windows xp became a priority until I can
figger out how to get my old email and faves over to the mac side.

Best,

Erik
