On Another Mail Issue

Every once in a while, I try to interact with text to get an e-mail  
address, only to discover that I can't read the message character by  
character, but then I try to read it a single character at a time, it  
reads the whole e-mail address.  Subsequently, I end up having to slow  
VoiceOver down to try and decipher the address.  Also, is there a way  
to work with the Tab key, while VO keys are "locked?"  Richie
