putting files in folders in the list view of the finder

Hi folks,

When in "list" view, how do you copy put files in folders? I select  
the folder i wan and i go into the folder with the down arrow but when  
i paste files into the folder i am in they do not end up in that folder.

What am i doing wrong? I cannot find an answer in the help may be I am  
looking at the wrong things?
