I'm using the Mailing List Archives for this list at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/

This supports Boolean searches, searching by author, date,
and subject, and also allows me to page through posts by
either thread (next or previous) or date (backwards or forwards)
once I have found a post.

Just go to the search page, tab to the box for search terms,
enter a few keywords (or phrases, if you put them in quotation
marks) and press return.

You'll get a Google-like set of links to results, with the subject
for the link, the post date, two or three lines from the post
showing your search terms used in context, and the author.

There's more information on the Search syntax options if you
check the "Refine search" link after you've run a search. That's
just a link to their FAQ subtopic of searching:

http://www.mail-archive.com/faq.html#search

You can find the link with item chooser, but I usually just
VO-right past the search input box if I need to read this.

(Well, usually I just VO-down to the links and the context
sentences and start reading.)

You may want to mark the page for snapback (Command-Option-K
or find the option under the History menu on the Safari menu bar)
if you browse through a few entries and want to come back to this
search results page to (Command-Option-P or find the option for
Page Snapback under the History menu of the Safari menu bar)
If you want to read through one set of links and then return to
browse other links.

There are shortcuts to read next in thread (Control-n), previous in
thread (Control-p), next by date (Control-f), previous by date
(Control-b), and if you want to search for only new posts and
not replies you could add:

"-Re" (without the quotation marks) to your search terms

There are two archives that I know of: one at the MacVisionaries
page and this one at the Mailing List Archives. The MacVisionaries
archives are not searchable, unless you use Google and point
to that site. The Mailing List archives for this list has a built in
search function. The archived posts go back through December
5, 2005. (There are earlier posts you can read if you use the
MacVisionaries archives instead.)

The MacVisionaries archives appear to be incomplete for a
few months that have heavy activity. We first noticed this for
March 2007 -- when iTunes became accessible and there were
tons of posts. The last posts just didn't get archived, and this
has happened a few times since then.

You can also read this list at the Mailing List Archives. This is
what I do when I'm away from my computer but have access
to a web browser. By default the page is organized by thread,
so if you VO-down you'll get a link to the start of the most recent
thread. To change this to a list by date items, use Control-I. To
go back to a list of content by thread, use Control-C.

If you start reading the first item in a date-ordered list, use
Control-b to move back to the next-to-last post, and Control-f
to move forward by date. Other browsers may use the Alt key
for shortcut combinations in place of the control key.

I'll probably post again, with some examples, of how to search
the archives. I started to answer Simon's post about this but
had to start again.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther
