selecting text

So, I'm tryig to select a phone number out of a conversation in msn.  
I've had a similar problem selecting text elsewhere, but I can't  
recall when. Here's what I'm doing.

I interact with the text, get where I want to be, and press VO keys  
inter, this does select the text as i go over it, but as soon as i try  
to stop selecting, it makes the same noise I hear when it delites  
things, it's like it's deselecting it for some reason. any suggestions?
