Found some tips here:

Sounds like you can run your MacBook closed if you put it to sleep,
close the lid, and then wake it up via an external device with the power
plugged in. I just tried it. I put my macbook to sleep (which took a
good 30 seconds), closed the lid, and then hit the space on an external
USB keyboard which woke it back up.

can i ask why you want to close the lid and play music? This would
increase the chances of the macbook over heating

HI all.
Is is possible to use a macbook with the lid closed and listen to
iTunes music or not?
I've searched through system preferences and can't find any settings
to do with closing the macbook lid or anything like that.
I'm thinking it's not possible to leave the macbook lid closed while
listening to music.
If anyone can shed some light on this, that would be greatly
appreciated.
