Sounds like you can run your MacBook closed if you put it to sleep, close the lid, and then wake it up via an external device with the power plugged in. I just tried it. I put my macbook to sleep (which took a good 30 seconds), closed the lid, and then hit the space on an external USB keyboard which woke it back up.
