OK, let's take this nice and slow. Firstly, and foremost: What version of o s x are you running, and are yu running the latest build of ITunes7? Remember that the vo keys are control and option. you said the backslash key is next to your return key? That's kind a funky, I've never seen that. Now I have seen keyboards where it is to the left of the backspace key, or as apple would call it, the delete key, but never to the left of the enter/return key. Um? Hmm... ok... hmm... let me think here... OK, so, you hit... ok, wait... hang on a sec... let me ask you this: are you interacting with the songs outline first? Do this for me.

1. Let's go head and bring up ITunes. If it's already running, command tab to it and hit command q to quit. then bring it back up. This way we got a clean slate.

OK, now here's what I want you to do for me.

2. Go to radio in your source list.

3. OK, now tab over with the tab key until you hear songs outline.

4. OK, now interact with that, so do your vo shift down arrow.

5. OK, now let's make sure that not just the status collumn reads. If you vo down arrow here you're gonna probably just hear blank blank. The reason's because you're actually now in the status collumn which appears right to the left of the actual name of the stations. So, even though a catagory doesn't per sey have a status field, I think it'll still be there. So, just, ya know, like, be aware.

6. OK, so don't vo down arrow, instead, just down arrow. See, the thing is, you're already interacting with the songs outline, so, really, down arrowing without the vo keys won't hurt anything. This way it'll read all the collumns straight across. OK, now find the catagory that you want by down arrowing. Got it? OK, great.

7. now what we gotta do, is to expand it. Basicly there is an expantion icon that basicly to a sighted person would look like a triangle. So what you need to do now that you're on the catagory, is hit vo keys+backslash. Don't use the shift key. Just vo keys, which remember? is ctrl+option. now while holding those two keys down, hit backslash.

I need to also tell you one thing here that I think most users here are not rememberring. Are you on a laptop? If so, that is your issue. Folks, it could be that if he is, then remember? his keys will then be set to hardware not software, so, basicly, you need thus to hit vo keys plus fn+back slash. so basicly your fn key is right immediately to the left of your control key. So on a laptop, you wanna do fn+vo+backslash.

OK, that should have expanded it. Now, by the way, if you do that again, it'll collapse the catagory. It's basicly a toggle, one time expands it, the next collapses it.

8. OK, so, we have it expanded. super? duper! Now down arrow for me, don't vo down, just down.

find the station and the bit rate you want.

If you have dialup, then you're going to wanna pick the lowest bit rate you can. It should be noted that the lower the bandwidth you have the lower you will need the bitrate, however, it too, should be noted, that the lower the bitrate, the lower the sound audio quality will be. Also, under itune's preferences if you under the playback tab have the sound enhancer turned on, you may find that you hear more artifacts and wavy sound on a lower bitrate station.

This is why you should pick the highest bit rate you can, that would be comprable to your setup.

Once you're on the station, just hit either return or enter.

Remember, you don't wanna hit space bar, as that is just play/pause, so that would only play the last thing you had going. Now, because I had you quit and reopen itunes, you would have been idle before this, so nothing could a been paused, but, so, really space would a worked in this case, but I don't want you making the habit of thinking space is play. It's not.

All space is, is play if it is the first time in the program, or otherwise pause/un? pause.

You following me?

ok, now let's stop the station.

Quit interacting with the songs outline. sometimes vo will stop by itself when you hit return, but don't count on it, so do vo shift up arrow.

remember, fn+vo+shifgt+up arrow if you're on a portible system.

OK, now, do vo+home, or remember: fn+vo+home if you're on a laptop.

by the way, if it dinged when you did the stop interacting thing earlier? Don't fret. Don't pannick, that's fine. That just means it already wasn't interacting any longer with the songs outline. No biggy.

OK, so you're now on the previous button, right? ok, vo right once, or fn+vo+right, depending. OK, next button, we don't want this. Do it again. Pause button.

Good deal, hit vo space, or a corse again, fn+vo+space if needed.

There ya go, you're in business.

Last thing on this I need to let you know, and this isn't just with radio, this is itunes in a whole: remember that when you quit itunes with command+q: wherever you were in the source list, is where you'll be next time you launch ITunes, so, if you quit whilst in radio, then just know, when you go back in, you're not gonna be on your music library. You'll have to go to the sources list, and fix that.

Finally, look under keyboard in the system preferences which is in both: the apple menu, and also in the doc, in order to change from hardware to software keys, if you don't wanna keep having to use the fn key. Just know if you do this though, that then your hardware keys like for volume etc. won't work. I don't know if fn with them then would or not. You'd just have to experiment.

Chris.

Subject: ITUNES HELP USING THE RADIO

HI DAVID AND CHRIS,

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN TRYING TO RESOLVE MY PROBLEM WITH THIS AP.

ON MY KEYBOARD THE BACKSLASH KEY IS NEXT TO THE RETURN KEY AND IF YOU PRESS THE SHIFT KEY IT BECOMES THE VERTICAL LINE.

I'VE TRIED JUST USING V.O KEYS WITH THE BACK SLASH KEY WITH NO JOY. BACKSLASH ON ITS OWN AND COMMAND BACKSLASH DON'T WORK EITHER THEY JUST MOVE ME TO THE LAST ROW IN THE LIST OF AVAILABLE MUSIC TYPES.

HAVE YOU ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

ONCE AGAIN THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER.

GRAHAM
