Hi Will,

If you choose Pinyin, you can type in Romanized Chinese, but the problem is that's not enough to give a unique word, so when you press return a table comes up to select the character you want. VoiceOver can't read the character entries as you arrow through. Leopard is supposed to have new features, including a help menu in English for each of the input methods that shows up as extra options on the Text input menu after you select an input method. The shortcut key for the extended menu help is Option-Shift-E in Tiger.

Some other input methods are supposed to give character strokes for keyboard combinations. The only mode you can easily use to hear non- latin characters (e.g. Russian, Greek, etc.) is in TextEdit input.

Cheers,

Esther

For languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, check the box to select the input method (e.g. "Simplified Chinese" or "Traditional Chinese") before trying to select a particular input scheme under that category.
