Sharing a folder on the Mac

Ok, i probably should know this but i don't. Now there is a ˙shared˚  
folder that you can use to drop files in from another computer on the  
network and so on, but what if i want to share my ˙downloads˚ folder  
or some other folder, how do i do that and can it be done using VO? I  
haven't found any menu items or settings for sharing a folder, so if  
anione would like to tell me i'd be happy.
