Hello,
That's because the Microphone is probably one that requires power from  
the computer to work. Sometimes called a Condenser Microphone. None of  
the Mac computers provide Fantom power, that is the power to the  
Microphone.
However, make sure that the Line-In volume is set to %100 if you want  
to try the Microphone again.
