can you update older ipods with the new firmware to make them speak or is
this something spasific to the new nanos?

Chances are this will only be available with the Nanos. The Classics are
on their way out, by all accounts. In the future, it is likely that the
Nanos will just keep getting more and more space available on them and
will replace the Classics.
