Martie,

.ds store files are used to save finder settings like your view. For instance, do you want to use collumn view or icon view in this folder by default. Frankly, I find them rather annoying.

They really won't do anything under windows, but they're not harmful more than taking up space.

One thing, Martie that'll help you:

There are files under the mac that do not have extentions. Unlike windows where all things *must! have an extention, that's not the case on a Mac.

Finally, one more thing that may help you is any time that you see a file, that starts with a period, just like in linux, don't know how if any familiar you are with Linux, but it's the exact same principle. Any time you have a file beginning with a period, or as most would say, a dot, it means that you are looking at a hidden file.

For instance:

Martie which one a these files do you suppose would be hidden?

A. file_ID.dis
B. leopard.conf
C. .users
D. None of the Above
E. All of the above

The answer is C.

Look at how I wrote that

.users.

So, it started with a period,

dot? users.

So that means it's a hidden file.

Hope that this helps.

Chris.

Subject: possible problem with the mac zipping utility

Hi all, somebody sent me a file that was zipped, and so I used winzip
to unzip it, and in the macosx folder, there was a file called .ds
store, and it was only 1kb, and wonder what this ds store file is, and
didn't want to take a chance on opening it, since I didn't know what it
was, but also, the macdemopart1
file, as well as parts 2 and 3 were only 1kb in size, yet, the files in
the second folder, demos by mike arrigo, seemed to be the normal size,
except for these store files, that didn't seem to have any file
extensions, and I forget how many of those there were in the second
folder. Hope all this makes sense.

Marty
