Considering the cost of SIP communications verses Skype do you really want to use SIP?
In a word--yes. SIP is an open standard where skype is not. Also, you can find rates as low as 1.4 cents/minute for the lower 48, pay as you go, which is fine for occasional use from a computer, and you could even use a real phone with a VOIP adapter if you wanted. Not to mention there's only one skype, and if it breaks for a while and is pretty unusable (as happened last year for quite a while), you're not necessarily S.O.L. Besides, voice quality can be better. And calls between two VOIP users can be just as cheap (i.e. free) as skype-to- skype calls, i.e. free.
Of course, I don't see this as an either/or thing at all. I have skype, too, and even use it sometimes.
