Hi Louie,

I'm going to point you to an old post in the archives that covers a number of commands for selecting and moving in TextEdit by word, line, paragraph, etc. as well as answer your question. Suppose I am positioned at the start of a sentence in the middle of a section of text, and want to select from that point through to the next 10 lines so that I can copy and paste this selection. (I'm starting with the beginning of the sentence in the middle of the line, since realistically that's where you might want to begin).

1. Command-Shift-Right Arrow to select from the current point to the end of the line 2. Continue to hold down the Shift key and release the Command and Right Arrow keys.
3. While holding down the Shift key press the Down Arrow key 10 times.
4. Continue to hold down the Shift key and release the Down Arrow key, then press the Command and Right Arrow keys.
5. Release the Shift key, and use Command-C to copy your selection.

To explain: when you hold down the shift key, your selections get added on. The first Command-Shfit-Right Arrow selects from your current location to the end of the line. When you Down Arrow you select from the point at the end of the line through to the corresponding points 10 lines down. I added the final Command-Shift- Right Arrow (still holding down the shift key) to add the possible one or two characters that extended past the end of the starting line. You can deal with this by overselecting to another line, or selecting to end of paragraph or end of document instead.

See:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg36031.html

which gives a list of these commands for moving and selecting by line, word, paragraph, to beginning/end of document, etc.

These are general Mac Cocoa commands that work in all Cocoa applications (TextEdit, Mail, etc.)
HTH.

Cheers,

Esther

Hi all,
Is there a way to mark a block of text with out marking one line at a time? Can I put a block marker at the top of text then go down let's say 10 lines and place a block marker there and copy it to the paste board?
