Hi, I really like the streamlined approach of VLC, though I find it just a tad buggy. For example, I got really into my music collection right around the time I switched and spent days with my albums on random play, listening to all kinds'a stuff, some of which I didn't even know I had. Some time in my journey of musical discovery, the player got stuck on random, and now I have to turn random off any time I want to listen to an audiobook.

I've also noticed it doesn't play things back quite properly. Ocasionally you will get a squeek or a squawk out of the thing and when you replay the file at the point where the squawk was it isn't there any more. That leads me to believe it's vlc. It also has an issue with playing flac files where it will just refuse to play sertain files past a sertain point for no reason that I can figure out, since windows players will play them just fine. Flac files have their own internal checksomes as well, so if one is corupt it will just refuse to play period, all of which leads me to believe it's vlc.

So I can't really say I love VLC to death, but it plays my media without grabbing me by sensative portions of my anatomy and jerking me around. On that basis, I'll continue to use it until it either improves or something better comes along.

Best,

Hi there, I've been on this list, once before, way back when tiger first came out. However, now with leopard and all it's new features, I'm reevaluating. My friend just got a mac, and I've been helping her, based on what info I can pick up, especially from blind cool tehc. Thanks, mike! <smile> Anyway, i have a few questions. First, what do people reccomend as a good player? I know itunes works quite well, but any other suggestions for good players? VLC media player, perhaps? Also, here on my windows laptop, i have two sound cards, and use the machine for internet streaming. What are good soundcards to use with a mac, and what software is out there for streaming to icecast servers in particular? Lastly, what about a good IM program? Particularly one that can connect to all of msn, aim, jabber, etc?
oh, lastly, does mac have an ftp client built in?

TIA,
Arthur.
